Could I have type 2 diabetes? I'm a 32 year old female with no family history of type 2 diabetes. But I am 40 lbs overweight, have high cholesterol, and high blood pressure (sometimes). I'm thirsty all the time. I have to urinate frequently, sometimes 2 to 3 times during the night. I'm hungry less than 3 hours after eating a large meal. And I'm tired (and sometimes sleepy) even after getting 8 to 9 hours sleep every night. Sometimes I'm so sleepy I have to shut my door at work and sleep for 15 or 20 minutes just to get through the day. Lately I have a recurring yeast infections that return less than a month after treatment (the last two months).

Sounds like me , and i have type 2, so go to the doctor, and get a test for it, and you maybe just need to lay off the sweets, and lose a little weight without taking meds, then you might have to go on metformin, like me , a pill at morning and a pill at night, iam on 1000mg , and doing good, for the past 3 years, but you have all the signs,

You have many of the symptoms, however a fasting blood sugar that can be taken at your doctors office while fasting is the best indicator. He/she will tell you to achieve a normal weight by increasing your physical activity and reducing calorie intake, as well as having a high protein, low carb diet. If you are not at a dangerous level, he/she will mostly likely start you on 500 to 1000mg of Metformin and that should help you control the blood sugar if you are doing your part, you may even experience some weight loss and definitely you will urinate less and feel more energetic. I wish you the best of luck!

Amy:
As noted by the American Diabetes Association website:
Type 1 Diabetes
* Frequent urination
* Unusual thirst
* Extreme hunger
* Unusual weight loss
* Extreme fatigue and Irritability
Type 2 Diabetes*
* Any of the type 1 symptoms
* Frequent infections
* Blurred vision
* Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
* Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
* Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections
*Often people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms
It sounds like you very well may have type 2 diabetes. However, a glucose tolerance test by your doctor will give the definitive answer. If you, the initial course very well may be the drugs noted in other answers. However, this is course of action only slows the advance of the disease and doesn't address the root causes.
A way that I'm using to address these root causes for my type 2 diabetes is best understood by going to www.escapediabetes.com , subscribing, downloading the ebooks available at the thank-you pages and acting upon the proven course of actions within them. Do this while you work with your doc and you will avoid a lot of complications. And improve your life a LOT!

I am not a doctor however it sounds like you do have Type 2 diabetes. Your symptoms of being overweight, excessively thirsty and hungry and frequently going to the toilet to urinate indicates this. I would suggest that you make an appointment with the doctor immediately to have your suspicions confirmed. If you doctor does diagnose you with type 2 then you should not worry. You can lead a perfectly healthy life with this disease and it may be a blessing in disguise as it forces you to make the changes in your lifestyle that will ultimately benefit your health.
The first thing that I would strongly advise you is to buy a blood sugar monitoring machine. companies like Bayer have great equipment for you to check your sugar levels and it makes sense to invest or research into it. You should also make an appointment with a dietician to have a look at your diet closely, you need to eliminate all fats, sugars and refined foods from your diet and replace them with foods that have a low glyceamic index such as wheat and barley. You really need to sort your diet out so that you can get a handle on this disease.
The next thing that you should do is see a fitness instructor to get rid of the excess fat on your body which is putting unnecessary strain on your body. Your fitness instructor will provide you with tips and information as well as a bespoke workout plan that is tailored to your exact needs that will help you lose weight. Once the weight is gone your body and bodily organs will start to function better and you will start to feel much better.
Once you have you blood sugar level controlled through diet and exercise you will feel much better. Try to stay disciplined and always avoid binge eating. You should also remember that there is a correlation between diabetes and heart disease and you should take strides to avoid it. Take aspiring and complete 20 minutes of intense cardiovascular exercise. You should also take supplements such as fish oils to lower your cholesterol level.
If you can take all of the advice given on board then you will definitely lead a happy and healthy life. You can even go the extra mile and go to diabetes retreat holidays which can really help you relax and learn more about diabetes.
Hope this answer helps, feel free to add clarification as I have subscribed to this question.

The best solution is a professional diagnosis, since doctors have the correct tools to measure your symptoms and the criteria for understanding what they could mean. Since your symptoms haven't yet deteriorated to a more serious level, I would guess you're in more of a pre-diabetic state.
In this position, you're in a transitory phase where your body is on the verge of becoming completely diabetic. It's still wise to get tested, since it's possible to manage and even reverse some pre-diabetic situations far more easily than complete Type I or Type II diabetes. Your symptoms are cause for concern, but they don't quite hit on everything listed under Type II diabetes either.
Not that you necessarily need to exhibit every symptom for the disorder to be present. Still, you may not have to worry about having a fully diabetic state without extra trouble from vision, weight loss, or dark spots on the skin. Diabetics normally have lowered immunity to diseases, and their healing ability to fight off germs or fix wounds is reduced as well. This is an important indicator you should look for.
Again, a doctor knows best. Hopefully, though, the moderate severity of your symptoms means you're afflicted with lower levels of diabetes that can be cured, or something entirely different.

YES, you could have diabetes!
Make an appointment to see your doctor, first thing in the morning.
The doctor can test your glucose in the office and tell you in 10 seconds how it looks. He will do some blood work, A1C and that will tell him what your average sugar level has been for the past 60 to ninety days. He should also update if needed your cholesterol issues.
You do have all of the classical symptoms of diabetes that I had at first, except for the yeast infection. If you can’t get into the doctor quickly there are 12 natural things that you can do to help yourself and some, you may be familiar with from your family.
1. Stop the sugar, HFC, and sugar substitutes. It doesn’t matter if you’re diabetic or not… These should be avoided. That means no sodas, candy, ice cream, or deserts
2. Stop eating bread (gluten) and grains of all kind, with the exception of cooked oatmeal. That also means no bread, pasta, pizza, cakes, pies, crackers, or cookies
3. Don’t eat white potatoes mashed or fried; fried foods of any kind should be eliminated
4. Drink 8 glasses of water a day and not with your meal
5. Take an enzyme with every meal
6. Eat lots of raw brightly colored vegetables at lunch and supper, make sure they are thoroughly washed
7. It’s ok to eat fruit but not after 4:00 and not with a meal
8. For cholesterol consider Red yeast rice with CoQ10
9. Also take Krill oil with Astaxanthin which will help the cholesterol from oxidizing and forming plaque
10. To help recover from a yeast infection take a good probiotic with FOS
11. For my heart I take Nattokinase and Arjuna organic heart herbs. Natto is a natural blood thinner from fermented soy
12. Exercise at the gym; start at three days (evenings) a week @ 30 minutes on the reclining bike. Go at a slow pace that you can sustain without hurting yourself
I was in denial of having diabetes for three years and it almost killed me, and it still could, if I stop watching my carbs and sugar intake along with stopping a regular routine of exercising. These suggestions are generally safe and most likely will help you. Getting your glucose under control is a major hurtle to being healthy again.

Hi Amy,
You may have the symptoms of Type II diabetes, but you are young! You have time to make your big turn around and your body will respond. If you start a program to loose weight and eat a healthy diet your health with begin to get better. Your doctor will probably have you check your blood sugar level and then you can watch your numbers go down as you make good decisions. You sound like you know about the symptoms and you sound like you have been studying about it. There is so much information about diabetes these days and so many people have completely come off medicine just by losing their excess weight.
Good luck to you in this process!
