Start by talking to the people in your family. There's usually at least one person who has a handle on the family history and may be a good starting point for at least a verbal background. Sometimes the older generations of a family can provide physical proof of family trees--pictures, possessions handed down, memories, names and dates. Unless you have a limited number of biological relatives, you can usually trace at least 100 years of family history by talking to the people who have lived through much of that time.
Depending how far back you'd like to go, take what you learn from relatives and start searching names and dates online. Archived newspapers can reveal birth, marriage and death notices as well has headlines and there are several websites designed to help people search records but those websites are not free.
