Tax obligation for part time home business? I just retired last year and began providing genealogy services to friends who have referred other 'customers' to me. I have tracked my expenses and income and have made a very small profit. Also, I do not charge by the hour, I charge by the number of direct ancestors I can find. I do not charge the customary $25-$100/hr for my time because this has become a new passion or hobby for me. My customers (only 14 so far) are thrilled with the family tree book I provide to them and say I am providing a 'public service'.
