Wanting to know more about optical nurves

I am 24 about to turn 25. A month ago I started seeing lights and my vision in my left eye was half gone as well as a little in my lower right eye that I did not notice. I have done an MRI and seen 2 doctors. The last doctor said it may be an optical nurve and I am going to see an optical neurologists, I am not sure what all this will be but I was wondering what could have caused it or what I should expect. I have never had any other eye problems, do not wear glasses and my family history is clear. Just wondering what you all might think about it.

I think you are doing the right thing. The ophthalmologists you have already ruled out any retina problem, which was the first thing it sounded like. The only thing left is some problem with the optic nerve. I wish you well, but this looks to be a real bear of a problem.

The optic nerve carries the electrical signals from the eyeball to the rest of the brain. Your doctors think there is a problem of some sort, not seen in the MRI, which is adding noise to the signal, and also eliminating part of the signal.

The optic nerve diseases, also known as optic neuropathy by specialists, are characterized by a decrease or loss of vision in the affected eye.

They are usually due to inflammation, but may also result from reduced blood flow or an acute compression of the optic nerve. The optic nerve is dedicated to transmit visual information from eye to brain. People with a disease of the optic nerve are usually adults.

Symptoms are variable:
* pain associated with eye movement
* flashes in the vision
* loss of color perception.

It is vitally important to be aware of such symptoms because they can indicate a possible loss of vision of up to 50% which may be irreversible.

If you have these symptoms you need to see an ophthalmologist. Certain optic nerve diseases, like glaucoma, require surgery and a hospital stay. Glaucoma is causes a slow deterioration of the optic nerve up to absolute blindness.
