Genealogy is an area where the information is radically more accessible than ever before because of the age of the Internet. So, I really would not try to focus on a single best site. I would suggest you take advantage of all the free content that is available out there. And there are a variety of sites to explore.
A word of caution, though: You cannot rely on the facts found online. Everything you find online needs to be confirmed separately before you can assume it to be reliable.
But with that thought in mind, you can search for hours at various free venues such as:
