There are seven recognised 'houses' of the English Monarchy which could be considered as a direct succession line.

These are from 1066 onwards:

Normandy
Plantagenent
Tudor
Scottish Stewart
Stuart
Hanover
Windsor

The Normans started with William I and finished with Henry III 1066 - 1216
The Plantagenet's started with Henry III and finsihed with Henry VII 1216 - 1485
The Tudors started with Henry VII and ended with Elizabeth I 1485 - 1603
The Scottish Stewarts started with James I of England, James VI of Scotland (this was a marriage between Margaret Tudor and James Stewart IV of Scotland and subsequent children 1603 - 1714
House of Hanover reigned from 1714 - 1910 starting George I and 'ended' with Edward VII

The house of Windsor reigned from 1910 to the present day starting with George V. Although these were really the Saxe-Coburgs, but the name was changed to Windsor to make it more English...

It looks very strightforward, but in relaity there were plenty of wars, false claims etc....

Hope that helps!
