Where can I find genuine information about family crests? Every family crest website I've come across merely shows you a sample of a random crest and then asks you to place an order. Does every family even have a crest, or this just a marketing ploy designed to make people feel special and noble? Are there genuine, free sources to find out more about family crests and actually view your own? |

There is no global "family crest" website that can simply tell you what your crest is.
It's rare that people have family crests, and generally you'll only have one if you're part of an important bloodline, as only the most important families used to have family crests, often being relatives - distant or otherwise - of royalty, or holding positions of power.
Unless kept in the family somehow, then often family crests are lost. My family name dates back to ancient Anglo-Saxon England, and while connected to Lords and Ladies, we have no crest, we probably did but, hundreds of years ago.
