Where do genealogy resources get their information? |
Answer 1/2 - Submitted 6/7/2011
Genealogy resources get their information from a variety of places. Some comes from vital statistics such as census records, military records, birth, marriage and death certificates. Some also comes from things like church records, cemetery records, newspapers, crown land transfers, land registry offices, immigration and ship logs. Depending on where and what you are looking for, mythology and the bible can also be of use to you. For example, the Acadian expulsion is well documented in history books.

There is a broad range of genealogy resources available and they are obtained from a variety of sources. One of the basic laws of genealogy - use multiple sources to support facts - is as a result of the wide range of source quality available.
The best quality sources are derived from the written record and are parish registers, civil records, original photos, original certificates, censuses, military records, wills. etc.
The next level of quality includes written transcriptions of original source records as above.
The next level of quality includes written accounts of events such as newspapers, magazines, books, letters, diaries, etc.
And finally, the poorest level of quality includes user input data online as well as personal accounts from tradition, memory, storytelling, family trees, etc.
